50th Anniversary Notable Alumni Feature Matt Stiner, M.P.A.: Following high school, Matt joined the United States Marines to serve his country and find direction. He received the Combat Action Ribbon for service in Iraq in 2013. After four years of service, he felt matured, but was anxious and apprehensive about starting college.
“During my first semester at Ðǿմ«Ã½, the professors, writing lab instructors and many of the faculty invested in me and gave me a sense of purpose in my life,â€ he said. Matt was on the TCC honor roll and graduated in 2007 with honors with a Liberal Arts degree. He was Oklahoma’s only recipient of the prestigious Harry S. Truman Scholarship for academic excellence and commitment to public service. He went on to earn a bachelor’s in Political Science and a master’s degree in Public Administration.
He began working for then Ðǿմ«Ã½ Mayor Kathy Taylor and coordinated the Ðǿմ«Ã½ Veterans Treatment Court, the third such program in the nation that became a national model to treat veterans involved in the criminal justice system who suffer from mental health and substance abuse issues. Then, he moved to Washington, D.C. to work for General (Ret.) Barry McCaffrey to implement Veterans Treatment Courts across the nation. His other positions include Special Assistant to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Robert A. McDonald; Director of Military and Veterans Affairs in the Executive Office of the President at the White House; and Director of Government Affairs for Humana Military. Today, he works for NeuroFlow as Director of Government Affairs.
“From achieving academic success as a Truman Scholar, to working for Ðǿմ«Ã½ Mayor Kathy Taylor, a Cabinet Secretary in our nation’s Capital and the White House, TCC was the foundation for all of those,â€ he said. “Without a doubt, I owe TCC so much. This institution of higher learning is very close to my heart.â€
In 2016, he served as the master of ceremonies for the TCC Foundation Vision in Education Leadership Award Dinner honoring U.S. Representative Tom Cole.
